The Alex's

We just came back from a fourth birthday party. It wasn't overly abundant with guests; just five little girls and four little boys.

Three of the little boys were named Alex. They were all about the same age and got on like a house on fire - collectively they were called "The Alex's".

When we were pregnant with our kids, we chose a few names that we liked, and then scanned the birth announcements pages in the months leading up to the big event, to ensure that our chosen name was not being reproduced in abundant quantities; "who would want to be one of 10 of that name, in their class room?", we figured.

In hindsight, I am SO glad we chose to call our son "Mister"!!!!

LOL !

Well, we weren't that careful with our choice of names (in terms of popularity).. but with our first, we hadn't heard of many girls named Caitlin... but a lot of other people must have been thinking the same thing. Daughter has had a few in her years at school though... and so many spelt differently, that we've unintentionally endowed her with a name she has to continually spell so that people get her version right.

Then, with #2, you really wouldn't have thought there would be many Alison's. Of the three babies (all girls) born in Bowral Hospital that day, we found out later that the other two had been named Alison, and Ali. (Needless to say she hasn't come across that many during her nearly 12 years.)

Even our Zoe has had some years at school where she's been Zoe S. to differentiate her from the other Zoe in her class.

I like your idea of checking the birth announcements to see the popularity of names, will keep that in mind for the future

lol 'Salina should rarely come across a duplicate...

My mother fell in love with my sister's name when she was pregnant and had never heard it before - within two months of birth, there were 3 others in a very small country area.

I had an unusual name (Jeanie is only part of my name) growing up, but it has been on the Top 10 girls names for the last 15 years - very confusing in the playground.

Its funny - rare to find a Tracey or Scott these days - but so many Jasmines and Zacharys out there!

Michael was the favourite around the time my son was born.

You have to remember to keep initials in mind when naming as well. We thought Andrew Stephen sounded nice, but with our last name starting with S, that was out.

Isn't that funny how names go? I know a million Emmas, Sadies, Kyras, Isabelles and Hannahs. Not one Mary :)
